Welcome message from the Local Organising Committee
Dear researchers, clinicians, policy makers and promotors of palliative care,
It is a great honor and pleasure to invite you to the 10th World Research Congress of the EAPC, which takes place between the 24th and the 26th of May 2018 in Bern. This year we will celebrate important milestones for palliative care in Europe and the world: 20 years of the EAPC Research Network, the 30th anniversary of the EAPC, as well as the commemoration of the 100th birthday of Dame Cicely Saunders.
A time for reflection and a time for visions – the conference venue is located a stone’s throw from the heart of the medieval city of Bern, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can stroll through the city, dating back to the 13th century, and connect to history, or you can sit on the terrace of the conference center with fantastic views of the Swiss Alps as you discuss or develop innovative ideas and visions for the future.
This conference will shorten distances: you can walk from the main train station to the “Kursaal”, the conference venue (15 min.), as well as from most hotels in the city. You may also want to meet colleagues from all over the world in one of the numerous cafés or pubs for late night discussions.
The Swiss Government generously supports this conference because of the high societal relevance of our topics. Discussions will include the value of the end of life, participation of the broad public and “personalized” medicine in advanced disease, as well as the availability of medications, health care services, and access to palliative care from a global perspective. EAPC taskforces and research groups will benefit from the conference facilities to meet and promote their work.
With support from many sponsors such as the city of Bern, the University of Bern with its Center for Palliative Care, the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences and the Swiss Association for Palliative Care palliative.ch, we are determined to offer a most inspiring and affordable Congress in the heart of Europe. Given the trend towards a more accessible Swiss Franc exchange rate you may even consider combining attendance to the conference with an extended stay in Switzerland or in any of the nearby countries.
In summary, the Congress in Bern will be remembered by its familiar feeling, and by having facilitated exchanges with new and old friends and colleagues in a very lovely and relaxed surrounding.
Come and join the 10th World Research Congress of the EAPC – we’re very much looking forward to welcoming you and the world in Bern!
On behalf of the LOC,
Professor for Palliative Care at the University of Bern
